Pelicans fishing below the Grand Rapids dam

Early morning of July 9, 1999

This pelican was waiting for the stunned fish in the swirling water flowing out of the turbines

After some time, the current carries away the pelicans into the quieter waters further down the stream where they rest between the repeated excursions to the turbine outflows

Whereas this pelican is taking off after first pounding the water surface vigorously with its feet to get started. Either it had enough of fishing, and didn't want to wait for the current to carry it away, or it didn't trust my trying to approach closer.
