Photo 1. This snow-covered mountain behind my window was inviting me on every sunny day since moving to Nanaimo last fall. It seemed to be just a short walk away, a continuation of the Blackjack Ridge that rises up just beyond the city limits. My map claims that there are cross-country ski trails on Blackjack Ridge. I thought this may be the place to look for them. Getting there in a small car earlier in the winter failed (an ATV would be needed). So I wanted to explore this area more on foot first. On May 12, I finally got to it. I drove to the end of the paved portion of the Biggs/Weigles Road, and rather late in the morning started walking from the Benson Creek Falls Park southeast as straight as possible in the direction where I expected my now hidden destination to be.
