Note those grooves that span the whole width of the shoulder. They can be found on many new US roads. They are supposed to wake up drivers who are falling asleep. But they are terrible for cyclists. Where should the poor cyclist go? The people who built these highways were not thinking on cyclists at all. On other new roads, at least a smooth band of pavement is left in the center of the shoulder.
